Charles Gounod, his life, his works

The only site on Charles Gounod

GOUNOD ( Charles), French composer (Paris 1818 - Saint-Cloud 1893),
author of operas (Faust, in 1859; Mireille, in 1864; Roméo and Juliette, in 1867)
and of religious compositions (Mors et Vita, in 1885)

" That is all that tells us a popular french dictionary on one of the greatest French composers. Even by a web search, one notices that there is no real information about this great man. It is in order to repair this injustice that it was decided to create this site which is completely dedicated to him. As Charles Gounod's great-great-grandson, and mastering a minimum the torments of the Internet network and Mac, I owed it to all of you who want to discover or rediscover the man who, just to mention it, created " Faust ", the opera which was the most played for a very long time in the world, in competition with its illustrious " colleagues " so much more mediatized. You will discover on this site a complete biography, more than six hundred works, a discography and bibliography, conferences, letters, all illustrated by numerous photographic documents, etchings and paintings. Do not expect all the same to find here a whole outfit of multimedia effects. I preferred to privilege the speed of posting, and to allow those who do not necessarily have the last version of such or such navigator, or large power, to have a fair access to all the information and pagination of this site. I wish to thank Saint-Cloud's municipal Museum which's beautiful catalog published for the centenary of Gounod's death was most useful to me. I thank quite particularly my grandfather Jean-Pierre Gounod for his encouragements and for the numerous documents which he provided me with. Without his help, this site would have never been so complete. And now, dive into the information, enjoy, and do not hesitate to contact me if you wish more info or simply if you have comments to make on the site. "

NEWS

The mystery of "La Reine de Saba" ! Concerning this opera some of you wrote to me asking if Gounod was a freemason (Franc-Maçon). If the question can be asked, to answer it is more difficult. And Nicolas Gounod, great-great grandson of Charles Gounod, will try to do so in an essay to be discovered on this site:

UN OPERA MACONNIQUE FRANCAIS MECONNU:
"LA REINE DE SABA" DE CHARLES GOUNOD.
